2006: What We Ate

Because it makes you feel good knowing that your eating habits are better than mine.

This evening, I went directly down to Cincinnati State after my workday to assist Chef Grace Yek with a Team Building Cooking Class for 18 people. Chef Yek, Shannon, and I put all the mise en place together for four menu items: Edamame and Corn Salad with Ginger Dressing; Red Potatoes with Chorizo; Chicken with Apple & Fennel Chutney; and Baklava. The three of us did most of the chopping, slicing, dicing, and par-cooking to make it painless for our guests. This allowed our guests to come right in and get cooking, and it allowed us (the staff) to manage the amount of mess that was made. Professionals simply work cleaner than non-pros.

The evening was a great success and the guests certainly had a good time. Chef Treome, who instructed me in my Basic 1 & 2 classes, was teaching an evening class and brought down a selection of appetizers (Swedish Meatballs, Beef Carpaccio, and more) and desserts (jelly roll, napoleon, and more) for us to share.

Wendy wisely pointed out that if we wanted to decorate our Christmas tree, it had to be tonight. As a result, we decided to order in LaRosa’s for dinner. She had a Deli Cibatta and I had a Steak Hoagie. We split a salad. Once that was done, we got to working on the tree, which now looks lovely.

St. Elizabeth's, 2006This afternoon, Wendy & I ‘catered’ an annual event for Over The Rhine. After their Christmas Concert on Saturday, they host a smaller-scale acoustic show/meet & greet at St. Elizabeth’s Church in Norwood. Wendy & I take care of cookies, cheese, veggies, candy, soda, wine, and lots of other food-related items (napkins, cups, ice, etc). This year, we served nearly 400 glasses of wine, so we know the attendence was much larger than last year’s 200 (either that or this was an exceptionally thirsty crowd!).

The event was really nice, and the fans just adore being able to rub elbows with the band in such a beautiful, intimate setting.

No real dinner for us beyond what we could scrounge from the party.

Tonight was the annual Over The Rhine Christmas concert at the Taft Theater in downtown Cincinnati. Wendy & I attended as guests of the band with our friends Brian & Milan.

The four of us met for dinner at SHANGHAI MAMA’s, a few blocks up from the theater, for an excellent dinner of Asian-inspired food. I just love their house-made noodles! After dinner, we took the long way around to find Starbuck’s for a cup of (overpriced) coffee before walking to the theater. It was a fair amount of walking, but we didn’t mind after the big dinner. The fact that the weather was unseasonably warm made it even more comfortable, and a nice contrast to other year’s when this concert is on what seems to be the coldest night of the year.

We had great seats thanks to Karin & Linford, and enjoyed opener Mary Gauthier more than we thought we would. Over the Rhine came on and did a very nice show, featuring many songs from their new Christmas record, SNOW ANGELS. Since we hadn’t yet gotten the record, most of the songs were new to us. Karin’s lazy diction made it difficult to understand the words she was singing, but we enjoyed the concert nonetheless.

After the show, we were invited backstage to say hi to the band, which we did before ducking out early and heading home.

After a restless night, I stayed home from work today and just laid around. By the middle of the afternoon I was feeling well enough to try some food, and it managed to progress through in the normal fashion and in nearly a normal timeframe.

Emboldened by this tentative success, Wendy & I split a Tony’s frozen pizza (’cheeseburger’ flavored — just what we love — something bad for us that tastes like something else bad for us) for dinner and my stomach has been so-far-so-good on that front.

Wendy made fondant and I made 8 quarts of chicken stock this evening. We’re hosting my mother & father and a couple guests for this Christmas Eve, and between now and then, this chicken stock will be defatted, frozen, thawed, reduced, and used in at least two dishes that I’ve got planned for that meal. Details, the menu, and wine pairings (thanks to Gary Boswell) for this meal will be revealed soon. Stay tuned.

Whew boy was I sick this evening. Around 1:30pm at my office, I really started feeling bad. My stomach was incredibly acid-y and I was VERY unhappy about it. I managed to hang in there for my two afternoon appointments, but left as soon as my last appointment was over. It’s a good thing I did, too… I no sooner made it home than everything that I’d eaten today …well… was returned. As much as I hate that style of delivery, I felt better after it.

That is, until I ate anything else. In this case (and I guess my entry for tonight’s dinner) it was crackers. Which were soon returned. So I stopped eating, probably a good call.

A dinner entry of three crackers? What is this experiement coming to?!
