good reads
I took the liberty of changing the subject heading from the random digest
number...
Since we're talking about books: I recently read Wendy Shalit's "A Return
to Modesty." It was so interesting! From what I've read of the reviews,
she's got everyone's underwear in a bunch. This 23 year old presents some
of the most alluring justifications for modesty. She doens't stick out her
finger and point you to some standard based solely on religious tradition,
she makes a really good case, providing even reasons why modesty is erotic.
She also includes the most prominent feminist voices, agreeing with their
assessment of the damages but not with their solutions. I think the whole
women's studies section of Barnes and Noble flashed through my mind as I
read the book! Besides that, I'm on #6 of the Chronicles of Narnia. I know
they're kids books, but I never read them back then.
I was so excited to see Real Genius and Duran Duran mentioned in this list
:)
