so, there's this cryptozoologist, named Dr. Ian Detweiler, and he's been
to China to study and capture the Wan Shang Dol, a mythical shapeshifting
dog of Chinese lore. He packs it in a crate and sends it back home
(u.s.) on a Hong Kong Freighter. Two Chinese Merchant Mariners taunt it,
and when the ship docks in the u.s. they are missing, only to be found
dead, and inside the locked crate. they have died from dogbites. the dog
is nowhere to be found. Soon Dr.Detweiler comes by the crime scene, and
so do Mulder and Scully. Hearing about the crime details, it gives Mulder
an opportunity to say, "bad dog" (coincidence? no, there are too many to
be coincidental) . Dr. Detweiler wants the dog found and found alive,
because this dog, he says, may be the last of his species.

Later, there are reports of other dog attacks, so Mulder and Scully go
investigating.

In the meantime, Mulder has been contacted by a reclusive canine expert
named Karin Berquist, and at one point we see a signature so we know it's
Karin with the "i" not the "e". they have been corresponding via e-mail
and each wanted to see the other "on a professional level" but this raises
the ire and suspicion of Scully, who distrusts Berquist, and does a little
on-the-side-investigating on her own of Berquist ( i didn't happen to
notice if the "Berquist Kennels sign had a "g" or not in the name. )
apparently, Ms. Berquist has the hots for Mulder, but if Scully hadn't
pointed that out i wouldn't have really guessed it. maybe it was more
obvious in an earlier draft of the episode, i don't know, but i'm off on
a tangent here anyway.....

Uh-oh! An Animal Control Agent gets killed.
His boss and friend goes on a personal vendetta to kill this dog, against
the express wishes, and at one point, threat of Detweiler. more attacks.

Later, the dog ends up in the back of the boss's animal control jeep and
attacks him and sends him to the hospital. Oh, did i mention that this
"dog" seems to possess human intelligence and seems to have a knack for
being able to open doors, unlock locks, enter Jeep Cherokee's, throw men
into crates, etc? rather un-dog-like things. (my dogs can nose a door
open, but they're pretty much screwed if the door is latched. not this
dog!)

The dog goes to an animal clinic, where earlier a veterinarian has sold
dr. linford, er, i mean detweiler some tranquilizers. animal control boss
tracks him to the clinic. mulder and scully are on the way but are not yet
there. Animal Control boss bursts in, and blam! blam! shoots a moving
dog, but it's not our dog, it's a dog who was in the clinic earlier in the
day. Veterinarian wonders how he got back in the clinic, but that's not
his problem now, saving the life of the shot dog is, so he operates on the
dog, and soon he's alright. Too bad Mulder and Scully aren't there yet,
because maybe they could have stopped the dog (that was just repaired) from
attacking the nice Vet. and, if they were there, they could have seen, as
we did, the dog morph into a possum-playing St. Bernard on the operating
table into an active, angry German Shepherd looking dog, with menacing red
eyes. but that's a detail that they missed.

anyway, investigate, investigate, investigate, conclude: Dr. Detweiler
did go looking for this mythical dog, but instead of him finding it, it
found him and assimilated him, and resistance was futile. now, he
(detweiler) is a werewolf, coming out at night and attacking with logic and
cunning, his perceived enemies. he can morph from a man into a dog.
(the cameraman was there to see it, why weren't mulder and scully? ) he
can morph from one type of dog to another. presumably, he can morph from
anything to a dog.

Karin Berquist figures this out, but she's such a dog-lover that she
remains quiet for awhile, and when she does speak to Mulder she sends him
on a red-herring / wild goose-chase. meanwhile, she figures that the Wan
Shang Dol will percieve her as his next enemy and readies a pistol (with a
tranquilizer--??) at her home. sure enough, here comes Spot! but she
puts the gun down, and the dog lunges at her and they crash out the window
on the second or third floor and die as they hit stuff on the ground. Oh,
well, she had Lupus anyway, so maybe she wanted to die before the disease
took it's toll on her body.

it was kind of a sacrificial way to put down the animal that she knew needed
to be stopped, because she herself travelled to China to study this legend.

as someone said (ms flinchpaugh, perhaps) she did look kinda Karin-y, with
Karin-y haircut and even slightly Karin-y features. I thought, perhaps in
this idea, i was stretching a little, but since somebody else corroborates
my story, maybe it isn't just me. Linford, Ian i mean, looked nothing
like Linford. And there were no OtR songs playing anywhere that i heard.

that's my report.
