Re: Evangelicalism (Fundamentalism)

Sorry for continuing a completely unrelated post (no Otr content),
but I would just like to clarify two movements that are often
confused. Fundamentalism branched off into two seperate movements
earlier this century -- the backwards literalists (who take every
work in the Old King James version literally, are usually
anti-science, and seperatists, and inerrantists) are
"fundamentalists", as a theological definition...however, those like
myself, J.I. Packer, Alister McGrath, Francis Schaeffer and even
Billy Graham, who believe, on average, that the Bible is to be taken
literally where the authors of the text intended it to be literal
(historical books and letters and gospels...etc) and as poetry where
applicable as well, and that the scriptures are inerrant but only in
their original manuscripts (which are no longer available now, but
which basically means that the messages as handed down is still
trustworthy), which normally don't hide from society, but take what
society gives positively, but uses the scripture as a screen, or
critique of that society -- anyway, this is known as
"Evangelicalism". No, that doesn't mean that you are an
"Evangelist", but is a theological term associated with the above
ideas. There, of course, is an even more liberal stream that has
branched from them currently referred to as Neo-Evangelical (and
sometimes lumped in with Neo-Orthodox) with contains those like Karth
Barth, Detriech Bonhoeffer, and even Tony Campolo on occasion.
Well...anyway, maybe that will straighten things out for you all a
little in this dialogue. Sorry to go on for so long.
amen,
