a barlow blade is a kind of pocket knife. the ones i've seen seem to
share a simple construction. the butt of the handle is rounded; the
handle tapers slightly toward the blade. two pins can be seen, one about
a centimeter from the butt and the other just below the bolster, which
caps the other end of the handle, often with the word "barlow" etched or
stamped on it. i've seen some with two blades, others with one.
i suppose it carries roughly the same connotation as a swiss army knife
does for many of us; our first pocket knife, or some kind of rite of
passage.
