They're considered Christian enough for many people -- Christianity
Today's sister publication Campus Life used to run cover stories on them
and promote them as a Christian band back during the _War_ /
_Unforgettable Fire_ / _Joshua Tree_ era. I think many Christians were
even willing to tolerate that "Fuck the revolution" bit in _Rattle and
Hum_. The problem with a song like 'Wake Up Dead Man' would not have been
the f-word, but the fact that it refers to Jesus as, well, a "Dead Man".
I'm perfectly willing to accept the song as a Job-like cry of despair,
myself, but for the more narrow-minded Christians, _Pop_ as a whole was an
exercise in are-they-still-Christian-or-are-they-not-still-Christian.

Heck, Jesus himself said "shithole", or the equivalent thereof, if you buy
Thomas Cahill's translation of a certain passage in Mark and/or Matthew.
(The word in question is often translated "drain" or "sewer", and some
translations leave it out altogether; Cahill says the word was Macedonian
slang that would have sounded barbarous to Greek ears. One wonders what
word Jesus actually used in his native Aramaic tongue. :) )
