Friday night at Canal Street was a deep breath outside again. As Jeff said
about Saturday, lots of good-humoured talked from K&L. They're obviously
very excited about the new project (Linford: "I think there are 12 songs
that have never seen the light of day.") and, as they put it, a little
punch-drunk from so much time in the studio. Certainly the most
conversational I've seen them to be on-stage.

Fun on stage, fun in the seats. Karin expresses her love for all movies
Christopher Guest (her character in Guffman is Parker Posey, "I wanna make
Cokes"). All his stuff hits a little too close to home, she says. Collected
stories from the road. Extensive props given to Kylie for working merch both
nights.

Other possible album titles: "Only God Can Save Us Now," "Cruel and Pretty,"
"A Little Kick-Ass Beauty Before We Die." Stories of Linford's happy
ownership of dresses and purses. An "unnerving number," according to Karin.
"Purses absolutely rock," says Linford.

Songs I hadn't heard:
Jesus & Mary. This one hits hard. Lots of strange thoughts for me coming
"home" to loud, empty smiles and towns. Strange new regrets for old
mistakes. The word "ocean" means more than it did do.

Fever. Linford just grooves on the guitar with this one. Such a simple
arrangement, great setting for Karin's voice. His lock on rhythm is still
good across instruments. Unfair.

Changes Come. I was sold when Linford came in on keys. One of those songs
that's just gonna make you sit down and look at doors like you're sad. Been
singing the snatches I can remember all week.

Only God Can Save Us Now. Karin's story about this song lasts for several
minutes. Would be a humorous song if heard cold, but the story adds so much
dimension and humanness. Maybe can get a transcript up.

A friend of mine did tape the show. It'll take him a bit to slice it into
tracks and such. May host the show online as MP3s, I may start a tree to
spread the love. When it's ready, I'll post. Glad to share, but there's no
reason to push. Pole pole (pronounced po-lay po-lay), means slowly slowly.
Blame the wait on culture shock. Which is no small thing, by the way.

Great show, thanks everyone. Special thanks to Jesse Callahan for waiting so
patiently in line, Kylie for working merch (of course), and Karin for the
Guffman reference. "Gather 'round, for I have news." Actually, nope, that's
it.

Nathan
