a "hodag"?  i'll try by intuition before i look up how
wrong i am.

it's a mammal - i'm thinking of a beaver-y thing, only
smaller, like a little bigger than a squirrel. ok, a
mammal, big as a breadbox, that likes to hang around
water and feeds on insects harmful to the area's
eco-system.
