True, but as the Golden Calf episode in Exodus 32 suggests, even God can
be convinced that he goes too far when he's pissed off.  :)  Which is not
to say that he doesn't retaliate at *all*, of course.  Either way, he
certianly isn't acting with the "permission" of the people he punishes.
