Atlanta 4/14/2002 concert review

Hooh, boy. These Sunday night concerts are starting to get to me.
I'm one tired boy.

So, Over the Rhine swung through town last night. It was Jack,
Karin, and Linford all playin' tunes at Smith's Olde Bar. The show
was "non-smoking, by request of the artist", so whoever requested the
show to be no smoking, my pollen-inundated nostrils thank you. Smith's
Olde Bar is a little upstairs venue in the Ansley Mall area of midtown
Atlanta. The place was packed out. I guess 100 to 120 people, but
that's just a guess. There wasn't room for anyone else, that's for
sure. People were standing against the wall, sitting on the floor and
pretty much taking up every space available.

The dress code for tonight is Christmas, or Italy, or my wife's
sorority colors. Linford's got the shaggy hair look again (I think he grows
it long just for the concerts in Atlanta, well, probably not) on stage
right. He's in a red collared shirt. He's got one keyboard set up, plus an
acoustic guitar, and his accordion. Karin is looking nice in a white top
and brown pants. The longer hair makes her look quite
younger. She's got her acoustic guitar. Jack is wearing a green
collared shirt and he's on stage left with his Fender Stratocaster
(sunburst? Is that what they call it?) guitar, his Fender slide,
and an acoustic guitar.

Here's the set list with notes:

    Go Down Easy
Linford on keys. Karin on acoustic. Jack on electric. Started
out kinda tentative. I've sat up close before for a show, but never
close enough to watch Jack's expressions, like when he nods when he's
happy with what he's doing and when he grimaces. I'm so close I can
even hear Karin's foot tapping out the beat.

    Bothered
Linford on keys. Karin's just singing. Jack on electric.

    Anything At All
Linford on keys. Karin on acoustic and Jack is playing the slide.

    Jesus in New Orleans
Linford played the accordion for this one.

    Green Clouded Swallowtail
Everyone's playing an acoustic for this one, except Karin.

    I Radio Heaven
Linford is playing the acoustic and Jack is playing the slide. This is
a real different, slowed down version of the song. I liked it alot.

    Little Blue River
Linford on keys. Karin on acoustic. Jack on the slide.

    All I Need Is Everything
Linford on acoustic and Jack playing the electric.

    Holy Rain
Linford on keys and Jack on the electric. This sounded more
like a "band" song than just a Jack solo song as Linford added a lot
of piano and Karin added vocals. Karin remarks that Georgia is where
Jack played his first concert in America seven years ago.

    World Can Wait
Just Karin and Linford on the stage. Linford plays the keys.

    Ohio
Karin all by herself, sharing about her phobia of performing on
the piano. She forgot her entire senior recital because her then-
boyfriend was in the audience. It's only taken twenty or so years to
get over that.

    Faithfully Dangerous
Everybody's back and Linford is playing the acoustic and Jack
plays electric.

    Jack's Valentine
I'm convinced this has become the song that everybody wants to
hear, but the band is tired of it, so they're going to screw with it.
Linford almost got all the lyrics right, he got to "and move.... um,
and move, and stuff. That's close enough." Jack played a guitar solo
that can only be described as truly awful. He must have intentionally
meant to play it that bad, right?

    Miles
I think everyone played acoustic on this one. Karin mentioned
the tribute CD and how much she loves this cover version of the song.

    ENCORE:
    Give Me Strength
This was just Karin on the keyboard. She says she worked out
this version for this tour, which means she figured it out this weekend.
Slowed down, great version.

    Poughkeepsie
By request. I guess we missed hearing the "Like A Radio/Ain't
No Sunshine" closer.

Lights went up immediately and we were quickly shoo-ed out of the place,
thanks to Atlanta's new curfew law for Sunday nights. Someone
in front of me had microphones set up and it looked like they were
recording the whole thing down to a laptop, so who knows, maybe this
little show will make it's way around. All and all a lot of late night fun.

    Later, children!

    Jeff
