Ann Arbor 12/5/01 show for download

Hello all. For those with high speed connections and a slight bit of
computer-savvy, I offer this show, the first of the December 2001 tour, for
download. Some of you in trading circles and especially jamband circles
will be familiar with all this, but for those who aren't, here's what you do.

1) Go to www.etree.org and learn about shorten (.shn) files. There's a few
essential pieces of software you need. Shorten is a form of audio
compression, but instead of compressing the actual audio into a poor
sounding, lossy sound like mp3, shorten works like Zip files, removing some
1's and 0's but retaining enough data to insert them back in when
de-compressing to .wav for cd burning. You don't really need to know this
though. All you need is mkwACT (the software used for converting), ShnAMP,
a Winamp plugin that lets you play .shn files on your computer, and a CD
burning program (one called Furio is available on the etree site for free,
although you can use any burner you want, Adaptec, Nero, etc, the other two
programs are free).

2) Go to www.furthurnet.com and download the Furthur program. Furthur is a
new form of file sharing dealing exclusively with .shn files, and designed
to ensure accurate downloads of complete shows. The software is reasonably
self-explanatory, it's a pretty simple program. There's a ton of other
really great bands on there too, aside from Phish and SCI and the Dead (all
of which are amazing as well, but I don't know how many people here listen
to that stuff). There's some Neil Young and REM and U2 for anyone
interested as well.

3) Your best bet for searching on Furthur is to just select SHN as the
format and search, this will show all shows currently available for
download. Clicking on "band name" above the list will sort the lengthy
list by band name, and the Over The Rhine show should be listed.

Now, words of warning. The entire show, in .shn, is 525 MB, so it will
most likely take several hours to download. The show might also not show
up on the search, either because no one who has the show is on the system
at the time, or because all slots are full, if so, just try again in a
little while. If you partially download a show, and then either you shut
Furthur down or the other person signs off, the program will attempt to
resume the download about every five minutes or so. I won't explain how
the sharing works, but it's a different concept than Napster and all those
guys run on, but it's rather effective.

Anyways, I'm going to bed now. I should be online most of this week for
some of you to download this recording. PLEASE DO NOT DOWNLOAD AND ENCODE
TO MP3. I was not the taper of this show, my roommate was, but the both of
us have a definate dislike of the way mp3 sounds (although we have nothing
against the concept of free music, thus, things like Furthur and tape
trading :-). Download the .shn files, burn some cd's, and please share
with anyone who is unable to connect or who would like a copy.

I'm sure there will be questions about this whole system, I'll try to
answer some mail tomorrow if anyone's having problems. Remember, if you
search and no OTR comes up, it means I'm not online, so just be patient. :-)
