FWIW, I say "y'all" all the time, and, by virtue of having lived my entire
life in Vancouver (except for one year in Poland when I was 6, and eight
months in Saskatchewan when I was 17), I don't have a Southern accent
either.  I just say "y'all" because the English language needs a clearly
identifiable second-person-plural pronoun, similar to the distinction
between "tu" and "vous" in French, but right now, all we have is "you".
