Cyberpunk
About ten years ago when the Internet was something you could only get to from a
university or Sierra Online via your $2500 486, and BBS service was a big
obsession, we found a local BBS called Villa Straylight. On it, a teenage kid
had posted in the download section some essays by Bruce Sterling, apparently
back before he became more popular.
Funny thing was, a phone number was in one of the signature lines. My
then-girlfriend-now-wife and I assumed it was an office or something, so on a
whim, she called it. A few seconds later, her blue eyes got very big and she
hung up and looked at me.
"Hello, you've reached the Sterling's" was all she said.
We didn't call it again. Nothing to say. What do you say?
I've met a number of famous people, no problem usually. But some people, OTR
being among them, just leave me grasping for words. Actually, pretty much them
and John Cage. Everyone else I've been fine with.
