But the best series in the known universe is Tad Williams' "Memory,
Sorrow and Thorn" series. I got so swept away by it-- and I've read it
four or five times at LEAST-- that I wrote a letter to one of my Goth
lists about it, realised, "hell, if I like an author's work this much, i
owe it to him to tell him," sent the email to him as well, and damned if
he didn't write me back the nicest, ubedr-cool email. He wins in my book.

BTW, isn't it Neal Stephenson, not Neil? His "Diamond Age" confused the
hell out of my, but I loved it. I still have in my head the image of a
veil on a woman's hat that can be turned up and down like the contrast on
a computer monitor. And his "Snowcrash" just blew me the hell away. LOVED
it.

Phillip Pullman's Golden Compass series is wonderful. It starts as a
children's series, but most of the way through the second or third book,
I began to think it was a little dark for a child. Gorgeous, though.

One of the best books I ever read is Emma Bull's "The War For The Oaks."
Traditional Celtic/faerie lore transplanted to modern Detroit. Similarly,
"The Steel Rose," which is, of course, set in Pittsburgh. I've forgotten
the author, but it was nice.

I just finished "Gun, with Occasional Music." Very noir, very surreal.

"Garden of Iden." Makes you think about your world and how discoveries of
"lost works" are really made. Again, can't remember the author's name.

I tend heavily towards fantasy, as you can tell. But it has to be
intelligent fantasy, and not too self-serving or dull, or I take great
malicious joy in heaping scorn upon the author's head.

Then again, I just went out to discover my car's been smashed into and
ransacked for the third time, so I'll take my malicious joy any way I can
get it. Fucking asshole bastards. May they wake up tomorrow morning with
their genitalia horrifically shrunken, a cute shade of mauve, and in a
new position upside down on their posterior.

Ahhh. The power of venting.
