First of all, I've already retracted my unanimity
statement, again sorry - too much CNN lately, maybe
it's rubbing off...
Secondly, i love this thread. maybe i'm just starved
for some spiritual debate/discussion.
Someone mentioned the use of a word translated as
'shit' in the new testament. well, if you believe
Walter Brueggeman, the very word in discussion is used
in the Old Testament. One of the major prophets is
telling the people (who've once again fallen into
idolatry) that they're "whoring around on God".
Brueggeman believes the more accurate translation to
be, you guessed it, "fucking around". he cites
several other passages he believes use slang that was
considered vulgar at the time. one that comes to mind
is the passage that commonly reads, "a man's best
deeds are, to God, as filthy rags." the literal
translation for the filthy rags is actually a word
that reffered to used menstral pads.
assuming these translations valid it seems obvious
that "unwholesome talk" would have to bear the context
of the talk in question. otherwise the Bible would be
contradictory and hypocritical which i do not believe
it is.
Both Marie's and Dan's last posts concerning this
thread were very well expressed. forgive my lack of
the energy to cite specific passages (this damn flu
bug landed on me).
anyway, regardless of your opinion of this poem, it's
certainly gotten our attention and incited some good
discussion. i appreciate the conversation guys,
