The film, came out along with Blue Thunder (about the preparations for
the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics), and E.T., in 1983, at the leading edge
of a wave of "bad government" conspiracy films.

Also check out any film about The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics,
or the People's Republic of China, to see George Orwell's 1984 (he
simply reversed the digits of the current year, 1948). Check out Nora
Lam's father's medical treatment in the film China Cry, or the decades
of paranoia in the film, To Live.

Orwell's anti-Stalinism, as evidenced in 1984, and the thinly veiled
Animal Farm, came from seeing his small moderate socialist party
brutally crushed by Soviet-backed Communists, within the anti-Franco
forces in the Spanish Civil War.
