despite chris's reminder of netiquitte, i am not going to repost helena's message. you read it. here's my response.
WHAT THE HELL DO YOU WANT US TO TALK ABOUT, THEN???
i'd much rather hear about why someone didn't like karin's hair than another *stimulating* discussion (can you hear the sarcasm through AOL?) about what "all i need is everything" means or everyone's favorite song! they've been playing the same music for so long (ever since i have been on the list, which has been a LONG time) that we're tired. tired of the music, tired of talking about it, and begging for new stuff. now, that doesn't mean that "all i need" is a bad song now, but after 5 years there's not so much more you can say about it, you know?
when i lived in alabama, i would have killed for otr to play near me. i drove to atlanta and nashville countless times to hear them. and now that i live in chicago and they played near me last week, i didn't even go. why? because i am tired. i could call jeff (hey toasty--did you go to wheaton?) and get him to send me a tape of a show from 1996 and get the same thing!
look, i am certainly not advocating hate mail-type messages like some of the ones we have seen. god knows i have gotten enough in my time here, but please... are we so protective of the band that kyle can't say he doesn't like karin's hair? who was on the list when karin first got it cut? remember that? remember how that was the thread for days... and some of you who are upset at kyle were the same ones who posted an opinion about her hair then!
my point is this...we've tried so many times to regualte this list...to say there "should" be no discussion of this or that...but when it all comes down, we can't. there are always going to be non-gay (remember that post?!?!) christians who want to talk about jesus, and some will go the extreme of writing me hate mail. there will always be people who like other bands and want to post that here, and some will go to the extreme of saying they are *better* (gasp!) than OTR. there will always be new movies that come out and national events, and engagements and breakups and people moving...and it will always (inevitably) find its way on the list. why? because people are on this list--a lot of different kinds of people who have a lot of different interests.
so post away, my friends...
BTW, for strictly OTR content there is an announcement list. and if you feel you get too many messages about stuff you don't want to read, switch to digest and search for the OTR content! but i suggest you read all the posts. you will learn to be tolerant, which, if i had one wish, would be it.
