East Timor tribute

Okay . . . here's your East Timor tribute info.

First, I'm sort of surprised and pleased for the people doing the album
that all y'all keep finding it everywhere. That's just a really cool
thing.

But to the details------

The album is to benefit human rights activism in East Timor.

Background: "East Timor, about the size of Massachusetts, is situated in
the far reaches of the Indonesian archipelago, about 200 miles from the
northern coast of Australia. The Indonesian invasionn and occupation of
East Timor has been called one of the worst atrocities of this [sic]
century. The occupation has claimed the lives of over 200,000 Timorese
people (as reported by Amnesty International in 1990), one third of the
original population. The severe human rights violations continue today.
For mor information" From the 11/99 issue of Jar Magazine (Muncie's
scene zine, sorta).

They also list www.globalissues.com and etan.com (which is East Timor
Action Network) for further info . . .

Like Amy Smiles said, the CD is sort of coming straight out of the Ball
State University chapter of Amnesty International. It came together
under a fairly amazing fellow named Chris Lawhorn, who contacted about
200 different bands looking for support. Smoking Popes were the first to
contribute. OtR were second (yay team!). A lot of people ignored his
letters (eg REM and the Righteous Babe).

The OtR song on the album is the GDBD Poughkeepsie. That's it. So
there's no unheard tune out there for you. But if ya wanna support a
good cause, it may be worth buying the album. Plus it sounds like a
pretty interesting set of tracks:
Cataract Falls (Fort Wayne), Idiot Flesh (Cali somewhere), Dead letter
Auction (Fort Wayne), Hillbilly Hellcats (Colorado somewhere),
Optiganally Yours (???), Ramona and Beezus (Chris Lawhorn and his
bewildering deconstructive punk folk), Jailbait, Over the Rhine, Smoking
Popes, Catharsis and the Humdrum (Muncie), Blue Moon Boys (Fort Wayne),
Self (Tennessee), Mudkids (Indy). Apparently many of the bands sen
unreleased tracks. The initial run is 2500 copies. $10 is supposed to
be the asking price. Musical styles will be very eclectic.

An' let me say, this is sort of a really good example of the difference
one person can make if they decide to go do it. Chris even financed this
thing, and he's just a 21 year old kid from 4 Twayne. And that's the
story.

Other semi-related stuff that will be of interest to a few of you (heads
up Amy Smiles, heads up Matt Robertson):

1) Catharsis and the Humdrum broke up, of course. But before Newby left
for Belgium, they hooked up and recorded like 14 new songs. There will
be a second whole Catharsis album and a repackaging of Girl Takes Mercury
and Death of Komorov, possibly as a single CD, with remasterd versions of
the Komorov stuff.

2) Kevin Thronton is going to LA in early summer. Meantime, he's doing a
quiet little project that so far is called Automata. Band members: Chris
Lawhorn, Kevin Thornton, Fred Johnson, Drew Billups . . .

And that is all.
